Recently i have been working with a very simple "one light" setup when it comes to moody portraits on black background.
The setup is normally used to light up one subject, and i found it specially usefull when doing pregnancy shots.
My one and only light is a big octabox shot from a slight angle towards the subject.
The light will expose the face a little more than the rest of the body, however the soft light from the octabox will also wrap nicely around the pregnant belly and really make the subject "pop".
Its a great way to isolate the subject from the background when shooting with a black background.
I try to keep a good distance from the background and i tend to angle the octabox slightly away from the background so that no light hits it, making it all dark.
I have used this setup with a big reflector as well. The reflector is place just behind the subject making the hair better exposed.
